What's out there already
Unit Measure Cup
A measuring glass by drinkaware.co.uk designed to help you measure units in accordance to the type of alcohol, not terribly attractive is it, bit patronizing really,a clever-er take on it might be more effective?
It might be quite interesting to try and introduce this kind of glass as standard to pubs and places selling alcohol. Given to everyone. So no-one can ignore it.
Absolute Choice
This is very clever.
"Visual Units | Absolut Choice
Packaging aimed at the 18-30s.
A visual link to identifying 1 unit of alcohol
Britain has a negative image in regard to social drinking. Design can engage with the consumer to achieve a more positive image without taking away freedom of choice. Using a leading brand, the concept of this project is to make a unit of alcohol a visual object to inform the consumer and create a fun interactive drinking experience which creates an awareness of how may units are being consumed. Absolut Choice is a limited edition collection of five flavoured vodkas plus original. Packaged in 28 individual sachets of 25ml (1 unit). The calculations aredone, no more misunderstanding unit information, drink with confidence."

Social Commentary
"What happens when you decouple design from the marketplace, when rather than making technology sexy, easy to use and more consumable, designers use the language of design to pose questions, entertain, and provoke — to transport our imaginations into parallel but possible worlds?"
This quote from the project titled "Between Reality And The Impossible" by Dunne & Raby, perfectly illustrate the area of design i am increasingly becoming more interested in.
Instead of using design to and fuel consumerism we need to use design in the afore mentioned way

Need, Want, Have
"This is social commentary on consumerism. It is a look at the every day senseless consumption that goes on, my self included. Why do we need more than we have? Odd. Acrylic on wood" Found Here
I find it very interesting that the last image, for "Have" is depicted as being some sort of serpent creature, it reminds me of the story am Adam & Eve, (whether you're a believer or not, save it and hear me out) in which it was the snake who persuaded her to take the forbidden fruit. Serpents don't have a very good reputation in the whole story telling saga for example the hypnotizing snake Kaa, from the Jungle Book, (who always hisses "trusssst me") they're always out to do what is best for themselves. Us mere mortals display these hedonistic qualities in our excessive consumption as modern day consumers; if it was meant just so, it's very, very clever in my opinion...
Another prime example of the use of snakes to convey temptation.
(After exploring this idea, anything marketed with the use of a snake would well and truly put me off the product, there must be some sly underhanded-ness going on where evil snakes are involved)
