Culture Probe 2

I gave another focus group small plastic cups and asked them to mark on the cup where they would fill it to, with their drink of choice of spirit, if they were at a house party, pouring their own measures. Not worrying about sticking to guidelines or how many units it contained; the aim was to get them to mark a line where they would honestly pour it too.

Using the measure cup from the healthier scotland government campaign to gauge unit content I filled the cups to their lines with water and measured the volume of each one.

Marking on the measuring cup the corresponding amounts to show the differences better and where they sat in relation to the recommended measurements

Results

19 cups were measured

  • 6 cups sat on the 50ml line which was 2 units; a double measure served in a bar.
  • 12 cups sat above the 50 ml line (2 of which were closer to the 125ml line; a              measure for a small glass of wine served at a bar)
  • Only 1 cup sat on the 35ml line which was 1.4 units; a measure usually reserved for drink such as baileys and whiskeys.
  • No cups sat on the 25ml line which was 1 unit; a single measure served at a bar

Thats a large amount of people pouring themselves a dangerous measure of alcohol at once. When questioned they said that on average they would drink around 6-10 glasses similar to this in one night.

6-10 glasses of 25mls of alcohol in 6-10 units
6-10 glasses of 50mls of alcohol is 12-20 units

The recommended daily intake is 2-3 for females and 3-4 for males.
These results are frightening...
